Why Getting a Job in the Trades is Better than Racking Up College Debt
Ginger Schmidt
For many high school graduates, the question of what to do after school looms large: Should they go to college, take on potentially crippling debt, and pursue a degree, or should they consider a path in the skilled trades? While the traditional narrative often emphasizes the importance of a college degree, more and more young people are realizing that skilled trades offer a financially secure and fulfilling alternative to the traditional four-year route. In fact, for many, learning a trade may be a far better investment than paying for a college education. Here’s why:
The Rising Cost of College
College tuition costs in the U.S. have risen significantly over the last few decades. According to the College Board, the average annual cost of attending a public four-year university for in-state students is approximately $22,000, including tuition, fees, room, and board. For out-of-state students, that figure jumps to around $39,000. Private institutions, on average, cost $53,000 per year.
For students who rely on loans to pay for their education, this adds up to tens of thousands of dollars in student debt. According to the Federal Reserve, the average U.S. borrower has around $37,000 in student loan debt, and some students—especially those who pursue advanced degrees—graduate with much more.
moreInvesting in Talent: Why Paying More for Qualified Employees is Worth it in the Skilled Trades Industry
In the skilled trades industry, where precision and expertise are paramount, the value of qualified employees cannot be overstated. While it may be tempting for companies to cut costs by hiring less experienced workers or offering lower wages, investing in highly skilled and qualified employees yields long-term benefits that far outweigh the initial expense. In this blog, we explore why paying more for qualified employees is not only worth it but essential for success in the skilled trades industry.
Quality Workmanship
Trade jobs require a level of precision and craftsmanship that can only be attained through years of training and experience. From intricate carpentry to precise welding, the attention to detail and commitment to excellence that qualified employees bring to their craft result in superior workmanship that sets companies apart from their competitors.
Efficiency and Productivity
In the skilled trades industry, time is money. Qualified employees possess the skills and proficiency to complete tasks efficiently and effectively, minimizing downtime and maximizing productivity. Their experience allows them to troubleshoot problems quickly, find innovative solutions, and adapt to changing circumstances on the job site. By investing in qualified employees, companies can streamline operations, meet project deadlines, and ultimately increase profitability.

moreBreaking the Mold: Women in Blue-Collar Trades Jobs
Ginger Schmidt and Seth Nelson
Our world is ever-changing. Now, more than ever, barriers are being broken and stereotypes are being challenged by those who’ve been marginalized. Women have become a dominant force in the Blue Collar/Trades sector and have excelled in spaces (such as construction, plumbing, welding, and electrical) that until recently were almost exclusively occupied by men. As we get farther into the twenty-first century, tradeswomen continue to break the mold. My blog explores the inspiring stories of blue-collar women and the impact they make.
Breaking Stereotypes
Blue Collar life is often associated with brute physical strength, gritty working conditions, and the need to maintain a rugged exterior. This ultra-macho perception of trade work makes the industry seem to be an inaccessible, undesirable, and downright hostile place for a woman to work. However, the reality differs greatly from this outdated image of our profession, as evidenced by myself (a welder and custom painter with my own shop) and by the millions of women worldwide making a living with their hands.
Challenges and Triumphs
All this isn’t to say that being a female in a space that is still male-dominated comes without its challenges. Women in blue-collar spaces often face prejudice, stereotypes, and even harassment. This disparity proves there is still a dire need for tradeswomen to create communities, networks, and organizations that offer support, guidance and comradery for both veterans of the industry and those newcomers seeking to make their mark.

moreBuilding a Brighter Future: The Crucial Need for a 4-Year High School Focused on Skilled Trades in the Bay Area
Ginger Schmidt
In today's rapidly evolving job market, the need for skilled workers in various trades has become increasingly apparent. However, the current educational landscape in the SF/Bay Area lacks the necessary emphasis on skilled trades education. This blog delves into the benefits of a 4-year high school focused on skilled trades and highlights the challenges faced in this field.
The demand for skilled workers continues to rise, and a skilled trades-focused high school can play a crucial role in meeting this demand. By providing specialized training, such schools bridge the gap between high school and workforce readiness, equipping students with real-world skills. Moreover, a focus on skilled trades education promotes inclusivity, ensuring equal opportunities for all students, regardless of their academic strengths or social class. While tech jobs may come and go, skilled trades workers will always be in demand, making this educational approach vital for the future job market.
Unfortunately, traditional high schools tend to overlook vocational training, thereby failing to provide students with the necessary skills for skilled trades careers. Moreover, in the Bay Area, trade-focused programs are limited, making it challenging for students to pursue their interests in this field. Additionally, societal perceptions often relegate skilled trades to the status of inferior alternatives, leading to misconceptions about the potential offered by these careers.
